The basic VME specification used to be a free hand-out from, (I think Intel), or one of the other sponsers of the spec. I have been dealing with VME since it's adoption, can I help you.

Although they charge for standards, base VME is so old that you might get it there for free.
Unfortunately, I have onlz some old photocopies, so email wouldn't work..
FWIW, it is almost exact match to the 68000 bus signals. Learn about MC68000 bus signals and protocols and you'll know 80% of VME stuff...
